Cádiz is not only the oldest
city in Europe, but it is also the southernmost.
Located in the bay with the same name, and surrounded
by the Atlantic Ocean, Cádiz is linked
to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula by a narrow
isthmus. It´s one of the eight provinces
that comprise Andalucía.
The province of Cádiz has 260 km of coastal, with countless beaches of
fine sand. Just in Cádiz city you can find La Caleta
beach, in the old
quarter, and Victoria, Santa María del Mar and Cortadura in the new
built-up area. This, together with its great temperate climate, with an
annual average temperature of 17,6º C., makes of Cádiz a wonderful
place of living.
Cádiz has an ancient history. It was founded by the Phoenicians, and
Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Muslims also left their mark in
this land. Cádiz played an important role in the discovery of America.
Cádiz hasn´t got a massive tourist
industry, what, together with its university atmosphere,
makes its people friendly and welcoming.
Its old quarter, considered historical and artistic monument, is
surrounded by old walls. Inside the walls you can find important
monuments as the baroque-neo-classicist Cathedral, Santa Cruz Church,
San Sebastián and Santa Catalina Castles, Puertas de Tierra (old gate
of the city), etc..
